Any business can be sustainable. Any business can introduce green activity into its processes. You just have to take a fresh look at what you do and how you do it. The important thing to remember is that it’s not just the big things that make a difference – it's the little things too. They all add up.
So to get you started visit Envirowise or Business Link. There's lots of information available to help you understand what you can do in your business today, to improve tomorrow.
To get you started here are some of our suggestions of things you could do right now, maybe even without leaving your seat. You can even encourage your colleagues to take part by downloading some posters to remind them – just click here.
Turn over an old leaf
Paper comes with two sides, so why not use both? Keep all your discarded print outs and use the other side before you recycle it. It will save you money too.
One lump or two?
When you want a hot drink use a mug. Avoid those plastic cups from vending machines – they get used once then head straight to landfill.
Flick the switch
When you need to use the lights or your computer, turn them on. When you’ve finished, turn them off. The same goes for anything that uses electricity. When you leave at night make sure everything that can be turned off is – and unplug your mobile recharger. Electricity costs money, and energy prices keep rising.
Buy local
When your buying anything for your office – paper, coffee, computers, furniture – think about how far it travels to reach you. Is there a local supplier you could use? It will reduce the miles your order travels, and the amount of CO2 generated.
On your bike
Try to avoid driving to work. If you do need to is there a car share scheme you could join? Using public transport will reduce emissions, and if you take your bike to work it will reduce your waistline.
Bin it
Make it easy for people in your office to recycle – get some bins so you can separate your waste.
Green paper
When you’re buying paper for your printer or photocopier look for a recycled alternative. There are great papers available and envelopes too. But if you can’t find recycled, buy something that carries the FSC logo.
