Our motivation to launch Today and Tomorrow began with a desire to turn our own business green. This is a short explanation of what we've done so far.
Our first step to understand the environmental impact of our company was to ask some experts for their help. We spoke to an organisation called Envision who provide environmental business support to help companies cut cost and reach new markets.
We followed an Environmental Management course to help us understand the issues and identify the solutions. This enabled us to develop and implement an Environmental Management System in our office, which meets the BS 8555 standard.
So what does that mean for us? Well, there are some things we do differently now. These are outlined in our Environmental Policy, which states our environmental commitment and our three main objectives:
• Reduce our energy consumption
• Reduce the amount of waste we generate
• Use green suppliers.
Reduce our energy consumption
Anything that uses energy - computers, lights, heating - is turned on when we need it, and off when we’ve finished with it. It saves energy, and will save us money too.
Reduce the amount of waste we produce
We don’t generate a huge amount of waste – it’s mostly paper – and we recycle whatever can. But we want to do more. So we’re trying to use less, of everything, and avoid creating the waste in the first place.
Use green suppliers
We’re looking at every aspect of our business to see if there is a greener alternative? Not just products, but services too. We regularly review what percentage of the materials and services we buy come from sustainable suppliers.
This isn’t the end of the story though, it’s just the beginning. Our Environmental Management System will be developed and updated as our business changes, and there’ll be an annual review to ensure that we’re doing everything we can.
